31 May Mercedes-Benz completes comeback, Volkswagen wins the round
FG Motorsport’s Mitchell Randall completed a superb comeback to win the final race of the opening weekend for the Hi-Tec Oils APC Enduro Championships.
Randall held out the advances of Allan Jarvis in the T0A57D Motorsport Volkswagen Polo GTi and Troy Derwent driving the PB Motorsport Services Holden Astra HSV VXR to take an unexpected win considering a collision forced late night repairs on Friday night.
However, it was the Ultimate Diesel Tuning Ford Mustang Mach 1 with Bryce Fullwood at the wheel dominating the event until a fuel system problem forced it to stop five minutes from the finish. Fullwood was towed back to the pits and completed the race, but dropped significant time.
Randall sat a comfortable second until the safety car came out in response to Fullwood stopping allowing both Jarvis and Derwent to close considerably.
It was a thrilling close to the race as Randall ably defended from Jarvis through the back corners, but used the power of the Mercedes-Benz to build a margin only for it to disappear again.
Derwent kept a watching brief and was prepared to take advantage if the lead two collided, but this failed to occur.
In the end, Randall managed to hold on by the barest of margins from Jarvis and Derwent, while David Ling took fourth to be second in A1 Class behind the race winner.
Fullwood still managed to win A2 Class after key rivals Hadrian Morrall and Tyler Mecklem failed to start in the Parramatta Vehicle Services Ford Mustang Mach 1 after problems arose during the two hour event.
The Morrall/Mecklem Mustang joined the A1 Towing Bathurst BMW 1M E82 as a non-starter.
Round 2 of the Hi-Tec Oils APC Enduro Championships heads up north to Queensland Raceway as part of a stacked Hi-Tec Oils Super Series line-up at the 2 Days of Thunder on June 27-29.
