19 Oct SATURDAY OPENER RUN AND WON AT SYDNEY MOTORSPORT PARK
The PVS Sydney Stoush racing action at Sydney Motorsport Park kicked off Saturday morning with the first of four races across the weekend. As the penultimate round of the 2024 Meguiar’s Australian Production Cars season gets underway, racers in all classes were putting in their best efforts to set intentions for the weekend’s racing during the opening 30 minutes of racing.
The weekend’s racing opened with a wild one-minute dash to the checkered flag at the end of race one after a Safety Car restart. When all was said and done it was Cameron Crick behind the wheel of the #118 DA Campbell Transport BMW M2 he’s sharing with Dean Campbell this weekend who would take the outright and class X victory. Crick is fresh from being named the best performing rookie in the 2024 Bathurst 1000 – an accolade that has no doubt helped in securing today’s race one win.
It was an all class X race one podium, with Grant Sherrin (#27 Sherrin Rentals BMW M4) crossing the line in second and Simon Hodges (#21 Secure Wealth BMW M4 – driving with Leigh Burges) next in third.
Rounding out the top five outright were Hadrian Morrall (driving with Tyler Mecklem in the #9 Parramatta Vehicle Services Ford Mustang – 4th outright and first for A2), and Chris Sutton (#321 321 Motorsport Mitsubishi Evo X – 5th outright and first for A1).
Locking down outright positions six through ten were Chris Lillis (driving with Nathan Callaghan in the #64 Cachet Homes Chev Camaro SS – 2nd for A2), Paul Buccini (#71 Buccini Transport BMW M140i – 2nd for A1), Tom Shaw (driving with Zaki Wazir in the #15 VSP BMW M1- 3rd for A1), Trent Whyte (#18 Ultimate Diesel Tuning Toyota Yaris GR – 4th for A1), and Karlie Buccini (driving with Courtney Prince in the #999 Buccini Transport BMW 135i – first for B1).
Lillis had a great drive to make his way through the field after starting Rear of Grid, while Meguiar’s APC newcomer Trent Whyte can only be happy with a top-ten finish in his first race.
Crossing the line in 11th outright and first of the Invitational racers was the #217 MOB/Ashley Jarvis Racing Toyota 86 of Robert Vandepol, ahead of Loclan Hennock in the #99 Wash It Toyota 86 in 12th (2nd for class I). Allan Jarvis – driving with Rob Jarvis – rounded out the field in 13th outright and 1st for class C in the #70 TOA57D Motorsport VW Polo GTI.
After a promising start to the weekend, qualifying fifth on the grid and running well during the race, the #3 Rowell Logistics Ford Mustang of Mick Rowell got loose coming onto the main straight and backing into the wall. The resulting impact triggered a Safety Car intervention to bring the #3 back to pitlane, before determining the damage was too significant to continue racing this weekend.
