25 Aug RACE THREE BRINGS PLENTY OF MEGUIAR’S APC DRAMA AT PHILLIP ISLAND
Sunday August 25 has begun with another hour of dramatic Meguiar’s Australian Production Cars racing as part of round four of the category’s six-round 2024 season.
This weekend’s action for the APC racers will conclude with one final hour-long race this afternoon, kicking off at 3.10pm and able to be watched live at https://speedcafe.com/live-sunday-at-fanatec-gt-world-challenge-australia-powered-by-aws/
Taking out the outright and class X victory today was Dean Campbell in the #118 DA Campbell Transport BMW M2 he is sharing with Cameron Crick this weekend – the second race victory for the #118 this weekend following Crick’s win in race one.
Campbell took the win after an intense battle with fellow X class racer Simon Hodges in the #21 Secure Wealth BMW M4 (sharing with Mark Caine) in the late stages of the race, while Josh Muggleton was third outright and first for class A2 in the #64 Cachet Homes Chevrolet Camaro SS (with Chris Lillis) after a similarly hard-fought battle with Hadrian Morrall (#9 Parramatta Vehicle Services Ford Mustang, with Tyler Mecklem), although this battle unfortunately ended with a spin for Morrall following contact between the pair.
Morrall would recover for 4th outright and 2nd in class A2, crossing the line ahead of A1 winner Chris Sutton (#321 321 Motorsport Mitsubishi Evo X).
Sutton was another racer embroiled in an attention-drawing late race battle, challenging A1 title leader Paul Buccini over a number of laps before eventually getting by the #71Buccini Transport BMW 140i, which would later spin on the final lap while trying to regain position, ultimately crossing the line last of the field.
With Buccini’s demise, Michael Osmond took the A1 runner-up spot from sixth outright (#17 Ozzy Outhouse BMW 135i), while the pairing of Grant and Darcy Inwood claimed the B1 win from 7th outright in the #143 A1 Towing Bathurst Subaru STI.
In eighth outright was the #27 Sherrin Rentals BMW M4. With Grant Sherrin at the wheel – who heading into this weekend was the outright and class X leader – the #27 looked exceptionally strong early and was setting up to challenge Campbell for P2 outright and in class with 21 minutes to go when once again, a blown tyre (right front) just after the pit lane entry saw him forced to trundle around the entire circuit before affecting a replacement. Insult was added to injury when Sherrin was one of a long list of racers to also incur a drive through penalty for a pit lane infringement following this stop.
Rounding out the top ten was the B2 winning #32 Luxe Performance Holden Commodore SSV of Damien Croxon (with Brent Peters) despite Croxon receiving a 30 second post-race penalty for disregarding a black flag, and the C class winning #70 TOA57D Motorsport VW Polo GTI of Rob Jarvis (with Allan Jarvis).
Zaki Wazir and Tom Shaw were fourth for A1 from 11th outright (#15 VSP BMW 1M), while the Invitational entry of Loclan Hennock (#99 Wash It Toyota 86) and Buccini were next across the line. Hennock had earlier in the race come to a stop on the circuit, bringing out the sole safety car for the race – a quick one given he was able to restart and get himself back to the lane.
